Williams Racing made its debut in the Formula 1 World Championship in 1977. The team’s first win came in 1979 with Swiss driver Clay Regazzoni at the British Grand Prix. Alan Jones, an Australian driver, won the Drivers’ Championship in 1980, marking Williams Racing’s first World Championship title.
The 1980s were a period of consistent competitiveness for Williams Racing. Keke Rosberg won the Drivers’ Championship in 1982. Williams secured the Constructors’ Championship in 1980 and 1981. The team became known for its innovative engineering, particularly with the introduction of the active suspension system in the mid-1980s.
Williams Racing enjoyed an era of dominance in the early 1990s, largely due to the partnership with Renault engines. Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost were notable drivers during this period. Prost won the Drivers’ Championship in 1993. Williams Racing secured the Constructors’ Championship in 1992, 1993, 1994, and 1996. The team also introduced the iconic “Rothmans” livery during this era.
The team faced a period of transition in the 2000s and early 2010s, with occasional competitive seasons. Drivers like Juan Pablo Montoya and Ralf Schumacher contributed to the team’s performance. Nico Rosberg, son of Keke Rosberg, began his F1 career with Williams Racing during this time.
Williams Racing faced challenges in the 2010s, struggling to maintain competitiveness. There were changes in ownership, with Claire Williams taking over as Deputy Team Principal. The team continued to develop young talent, including Valtteri Bottas and Lance Stroll.
In 2020, Williams Racing was acquired by Dorilton Capital, marking a new chapter in its history. The team continued to work on its long-term development plan, aiming to return to competitiveness. George Russell, a highly regarded young driver, joined the team, showing promise for the future.
