Designed by Hermann Tilke, the Shanghai International Circuit in Jiading opened in 2004. It is situated in an industrial complex. Until the Abu Dhabi course was built, it was the most expensive Formula One circuit. The first race was won by Reubens Barrichello driving for Ferrari, with two more Grand Prix events after that. Races scheduled in 2020 were cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but China looks set to host an event in 2024. Mercedes has been the most successful team at the Chinese Grand Prix, winning multiple times since the race’s inception in 2004.

Track Layout

The Shanghai International Circuit is known for its unique design, featuring a long back straight (the longest on the calendar) followed by a hairpin turn, providing a good overtaking opportunity. The circuit also has a challenging sequence of corners in sector one, testing both the drivers’ and the cars’ capabilities. It features one of the most challenging corner combinations in Formula One, with the beginning Turns 1 and 2 both 270 degree corners before switching back.

Notable Features

The circuit is an interesting layout when viewed from the air as it has been designed to look like the Chinese symbol for ‘shang’ which means upwards. Shanghai has a diverse ‘East meets West’ culture with historic elements blended with a modern city feel. The weather can be uncertain with heavy rain not uncommon during races, offering additional challenges to drivers.
