1950s-1960s: The Beginnings

The roots of Mercedes-Benz’s involvement in motorsport date back to the 1950s. The original Mercedes team, which raced in the 1950s, featured legendary drivers such as Juan Manuel Fangio. Mercedes-Benz withdrew from F1 in 1955, following a tragic accident at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

1990s-2009: Re-entry and Initial Success

Mercedes returned to Formula 1 as an engine supplier in the 1990s, providing engines to teams like McLaren. The team’s first Constructors’ Championship came in 1998 when McLaren-Mercedes secured the title. Mercedes continued to supply engines to McLaren, helping drivers like Mika Häkkinen achieve success.

2010s: The Mercedes Era

In 2010, Mercedes purchased the championship-winning Brawn GP team and established Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team. The team’s turbocharged V6 hybrid power unit, introduced in 2014, was a game-changer and played a significant role in Mercedes’ dominance. Lewis Hamilton joined the team in 2013, and together with Nico Rosberg, they began a period of Mercedes dominance. Mercedes secured Constructors’ Championships from 2014 to 2020, an unprecedented seven consecutive titles.
